What Photoshop Does
Photoshop is a utility used for digital image editing. Images are manipulated into better quality versions of the original in a process called retouching. Retouching can be used on a variety of images including computer and digital camera images, drawings, and other types of photographic prints.
Once the image is open, the user will see a layer of the original image. (This is the “photograph” layer.) Beneath the photograph layer are two additional layers: one for the Retouching Layer, and one for the Mask. The Retouching Layer can be moved around the photograph, and allows the user to draw on the photograph using a variety of tools. The Mask layer is a black-and-white image which sits on top of the photograph layer and will either cover or expose the photograph. After the drawing is finished, the user changes the Mask layer to the next color and the drawing is removed.
The image manipulations can be performed on individual areas or on the entire image. Individual areas can be moved, resized, added, or removed using the Pencil, Lasso, Marquee, Polygonal, and Brush tools. All layers can be changed using a Layers panel (Figure 10.1).
The image can be saved in a variety of formats, including JPEG, TIFF, or EPS. The user can also export the image to a variety of destinations including Adobe Illustrator, which can then be opened in Illustrator to render the image in vector form.
